Jake pontificates/mumbles about:

- Comic Con and “entertainment journalism”
- Gates-gate and the police
- Obama’s “health” “care” “reform”

I also play one Beastie Boys song as a shout out/get well to Adam “MCA” Yauch, who was recently diagnosed with throat cancer (although we’re told he should be fine after some treatment). Special subtle thanks to Levar Burton.

I’m actually going to try to do a short show every week now. We’ll see how that goes. My track record these past few years have been… not good.

Mostly me talking about Campaign 2008 and American electoral politics in general. It’s one big culture war, basically. Also, one song by the new Zack de le Rocha project, “One Day as a Lion”.

“Huh? He’s doing radio again?”

- Iraq: a nightmare, wrapped in a tragedy, wrapped in a farce
- neocons: even more batshit crazy than you guessed
- recommendations: The Power of Nightmares documentary, DMZ the book, It’s a Jungle Out There the book
- Obama Muslim rumor: it’s not a smear, it’s bigotry
- Music by Manu Chao, Santogold, and DJ Doc Rok

Had the epiphany earlier today that I could do radio shows in much less time if I gritted my teeth and left out my beloved background music. I look forward to the day when I have more spare time and can do my show in what I consider a proper fashion, but till then, maybe I can produce some of these short, stripped-down shows on a regular basis.

Also: I really need to stop doing “Iraq is so bad that…” posts and shows. It’s fucking bad. You know that. Do you need to know how bad?

The Power of Nightmares available for watching online here, transcripts here: Part I, Part II, andPart III.

For info on supporting the teachers mentioned in the broadcast, click here.

*forgot to mention the title of this song, “Your Good Thing Is About to Come to an End.” I kinda like the lyrics.

Welcome to LMB Radio v4.72 or something.

Due to my stupid schedule and stupid lack of organizational skills, I’ve been unable to do much blogging or record many radio shows for some months. To remedy part of this, I plan to make the LMB show a more podcast-y podcast (read: short) and try to do it every day. In other words, for at least the next month, I plan to record/assemble a 10-minute LMB show every day (well, weekday).

Today I talk about an awful bit of recent military propaganda, brave war resistance in Olympia, and play a song by The Ruts.

I’m making it up as I go along, as always.

LMB Radio Halloween 2007: Exorcist Boogie

Another year, another music-only Halloween show. Sort of bounces between creepy, campy and noisy this time. Featuring the audio stylings of the Cramps (of course), Crash Worship, Tom Waits, Ministry, the March Violets, White Zombie, Sisters of Mercy, Crash Worship, Rev. Horton Heat, Coil, Probot, the Horrors, My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult, Rasputina, Bauhaus, and a little sound collage work by me.

Weird show. Some of the commentary was recorded two weeks ago, with the intent of incorporating it into a show within days. Didn’t happen. So I had to ditch some of the old stuff, record some new talk, and throw in some music. So it’ll might be a little messy. But I think I’m getting the hang of this “record pieces of show, sew pieces together” method madness.

Oh, and as promised, the Keny Arkana video is here (go watch it, seriously) and if you want to contact the unofficial Weekly Radio Spin podcasters, their email is

Rantasaurus #2

Rantasaurus #2

To refresh our memories:

What is “Rantasaurus”?

Basically, it’s a short version of my LMB radio show, for those weeks when I can’t get into the studio to record a live one. 10+ minutes of me talking, two or three songs by more obscure artists, possibly more angry bitterness at the ugly world, approximately the same amount of snarky wit.

I recorded my talky bits for a new LMB show this past weekend, but just haven’t had the time this to smoosh them together with music to make an actual show. And each day that passes, the talky bits seem ever more slightly dated. So I decided to knock out a highly relevant, topical, and sexy edition of Rantasaurus in an evening, and assemble the LMB show when I get a chance. Tomorrow night, maybe.

So Rantasaurus #2 is me talking about Burma and assorted crazee geopolitics, with music by Edan, Blackholicus, and the Minibosses. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll kill 20 minutes.

(Really? Is he doing the show again?)

Yeah, haven’t done a radio show in months. You don’t want to hear excuses, though. I’ll try to get shows recorded and uploaded every couple of weeks.

- the Green Scare and the SF 8
- Iran moves towards center
- USA vs Iran: hot war or cold war?
- Johnny Cash <3 dinosaurs
- going in circles in Iraq
- upcoming “media surge”
- moving the goalposts, fiddling with numbers
- with such a nice embassy, how could we ever leave Baghdad?
- White House vs Freedom

Music includes Blood Brothers, Filastine, Pat Benatar, Orpheum Bell, Sleater-Kinney, Gil Scott-Heron, Union 13, Pharoahe Monch, Unkle, Anthrax, Hum, and more.

The background music (Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass) occasionally gets a little too loud, and I wish I’d spent more time planning out what I’d talk about. But otherwise, a pretty decent show with some nice muzak.

The Glorious Return!

The majority of this week’s show is a 2002 lecture by novelist and activist Arundhati Roy. It’s an excellent speech about war, power, imperialism, globalization, history, grassroots resistance, and hope. Please give it a listen.

Also features music by Sonic Youth, 65daysofstatic, Against Me, a Radiohead/De La Soul mashup, Devotchka, and more.

This also marks a probably transition for the format of the show. I currently find myself in Info Absorb Mode, constantly reading, listening to interviews, watching video lectures, and trying to mentally synthesize it all at a rapid rate. This is one of the reasons I haven’t been writing or recording much; I’m all about input, not output. So I think that one way I can remain an information sponge and continue to produce useful material for y’all would be to do interviews myself. Find a smart guest, pick their brain about an issue and/or the activist work they do, and upload it for shared listening. So the show might be more about other people’s thoughts than my own for a while. Which is a good thing; sometimes even I get tired of hearing about what I think.

And there will be music, of course. I think I’m too obsessive to give that up.

Thanks for the patience and support, y’all.

Rantasaurus #1

Rantasaurus #1

Woo! Finally did my first Rantasaurus podcast!

Rantasaurus #1 = Jake talks about the cowardly Congress cave-in, popular opinion, civil disobedience, and the future of Iraq. Music by Rusted Shut, Ministry, Combat Wounded Veteran and the Au Pairs. A little less than half an hour (some of the songs are long). It’s not a perfect show, but it’s the best I could do on a limited time budget. Maybe I’ll do another one next week, and it will be the most elegant podcast known to man.

And finally, I am proud of the Rantasaurus logo. Drew it by hand, scanned it, colored it and touched it up via computerized sorcery. Again, it could be better, but how much time do I really want to spend perfecting a cartoon dinosaur?

Ugh. What a painful show to do. Instead of doing it live via streaming internet audio, I recorded each segment on my desktop, and then crammed/smoothed it all together into a mostly decent-sounding program. However, while most 2 hour shows take me about 2 hours to do, this jigsaw version is only about 70 minutes, and took me maybe 4-5 hours over the course of three days. I will have to record my shows live forevermore, or find some tricks to bring that edit time down.

Due to a busy, harrowing week, I decided put an idea into action that I’ve had for months: robo-DJing. Instead of sampling dozens of new tunes for potential rotation and playing live selecter from my vast music armada, I’d just set the mp3 player to “random” and let the CPU do the choosing. On the one hand, this would probably lead to a wider variety of songs that you’d usually hear on the show. On the other, there was a much higher chance of getting songs that were radio unfriendly, or just plain crappy. There was also the final danger: what if the random show was better than my usual shows? That would have been a crushing ego blow.

I think this show turned out decent, but I don’t think this is an experiment I’ll try again.
