Lying Media Bastards

F.U.C.C.

Another week, another raid on a San Diego pirate radio station.

Last week we had the raid on Free Radio San Diego, this week we’ve got a “24-hour demand of shut down or face a $10,000 fine” for the super-anonymous 106.9FM San Diego.

Neither station was hurting anybody, neither station was interfering with other radio signals. Each was just providing free music and news to folks who wanted to tune in.

The 106.9 case is different from the FRSD case. FRSD is a complete pirate station. 106.9 is (as near as I can tell) just a transmitter, that rebroadcasts the internet station I work with, RadioActive SanDiego. And while FRSD was straight raided and sacked, 106.9 looks to be voluntarily shutting down for 2 weeks– and then re-opening with a new transmitter that is 5 times more powerful.

FRSD plans to return to the airwaves soon as well. So setbacks all around, but I’m hoping that these SD broadcasters come back soon and strong.

And in vaguely related news, FRSD has challenged RASD to a game of kickball at this Sunday’s San Diego Day, a holiday completely made up by FRSD DJs.

[Update]

Incidentally, you can donate money to FRSD here and 106.9 here.

And now that I’ve had a chance to look at the documents, I guess the FCC gave 106.9 10 days to comply, not 24 hours. My apology for the error.
