This article is about a sickening number of cases where US military recruiters go onto high school campuses, and then sexually assault the young women interested in enlisting. The focus of the article is one particular case in Indiana, but the sidebar mentions at least five other cases around the country since 2003. As if recruiters weren’t scummy enough for targetting poor, confused teens for early overseas death.
Part of this, believe it or not, is due to a clause in No Child Left Behind Act which forces schools to give out personal information about their students to military recruiters, if they ask for them. To that end, I understand that punk band Anti-Flag is beginning a campaign to delete that clause (although that site doesn’t launch till tomorrow). Sounds like they’ve got a couple of Congressmen signed onto their cause, so maybe they’ve got a shot.
