I think the underlying problem through all of this is that the neo-cons don't fully understand the concept of democracy. You can't dictate the will of the people. If you do, it ceases to be a democracy. So, "Will Iraq's attempts at creating a new government end up beaking it into pieces?" Probably, and it will be all our fault... and everyone will know it except us. Rest assured, someone will be "saddam-ized" in the process. Sorry, I had to jack that one.

"Will Iraq’s attempts at creating a new government end up breaking it into pieces?"

And if they do? At what point do we say, "that's what they want, that's what they're voting for." If we truly believe in democracy, then we can't wrap iron bands around their bursting barrel. Iraq and eastern Turkey and Palestine and the other "messy" areas in the Middle East are the bastard children of British colonialism. Our misguided "war of liberation" overturned a wobbly apple cart; there's no putting the springs back in the watch now. For better or for worse, the winds of change are blowing up the Tigris, and if the end result is not as Uncle Sam planned, there's no one to blame but good old Democracy (ours and theirs). Am I out in left field on this one?

Also: might Turkey jeopardize its quest for EU acceptance by Saddam-izing its Kurds?

Should I have used MORE metaphors?
