Iraq and eastern Turkey and Palestine and the other "messy" areas in the Middle East are the bastard children of British colonialism. Our misguided "war of liberation" overturned a wobbly apple cart; there's no putting the springs back in the watch now. For better or for worse, the winds of change are blowing up the Tigris, and if the end result is not as Uncle Sam planned, there's no one to blame but good old Democracy (ours and theirs). Am I out in left field on this one? Also: might Turkey jeopardize its quest for EU acceptance by Saddam-izing its Kurds?
