Lump of Coal

Oh yeah, and my landlord left me a note on my door saying that my messy apartment has violated the “cleanliness” portion of our rental agreement, and if I don’t fix it and give them photographic evidence in three days, they’ll throw me out.

Then the manager says to me “don’t worry about that thing, you’re moving out soon anyway.” Which I am.

So either everything’s cool, or I’ll come back from Christmas to find a big fat eviction notice on my front door.

I know that by law it takes weeks or months to get a tenant out of the building, and the landlords would be stupid to drum up some kind of conflict if I’m already planning to leave. But part of me still worries that they’ll do something crazy/illegal like changing the locks or throwing my stuff out in the street.

Tis the season. Fuckers.

  1. Don’t know what state you live in, so check your rights as a tenant. No doubt there’s something on the web. If they do anything that violates what’s spelled out in the law, they are in big trouble. I am both a landlord and a tenant, which gives me a weird perspective on things. Unless your landlord just likes to be a nasty bastard (and there are plenty who do), don’t worry.

  2. check out the legal term “Warrant of
Habitability” - that could buy you some time.

  3. Avoid having an eviction if you can - most likely the landlords trying to be a hardass and keep all your deposit money. I think the place would have to be rat and/or cockroach infested (it isn’t, is it?) in order for him to kick you out for that.
And how did he know what the inside of your apartment looks like anyway?…Did he come in w/o permission?
    Bad, bad oppresive landlord
