Nice eulogy, man. I agree: the only way to help someone is to help them help themselves. I often think [and write] about that simple truth, and how it goes ignored in places like Africa and Indonesia. Through the crisis-driven media, we learn that a "solution" involves dumping a billion dollars worth of rice, WWE T-shirts, and irrigation projects on the Devastated Nation of the Month, and then expecting things to Turn Out All Right. Give the man a fish, he eats tonight -- "and now, let's turn to baseball and see how the Yankees managed to land the Big Unit in a three-way trade with Sandra Bullock and North Korea." Teach the man to fish? Naw, that would require learning about his culture and the local fishing holes, and honestly, Regis is on.

Your ode to Bob is excellent. RIP, all those who stake out a little corner of this mixed-up world and say, "here, I'm going to do something, and even if I don't always 'win,' I'll at least have tried."

Bob's example of persistance, dedication, knowledge, patiente, and endurance, perhaps all similar words to say never cease on behaving exactly how you want the world to be, and so it will, as one's action will shape it, will be it.
Very well written.
